Ladies and Gentlemen Are you familiar with that uncomfortable, isolating feeling of otherness? The uneasy sense that you are somehow different to everyone else? That everyone else is regarded as the majority, the community even?
When this feeling hits you, the fact that it might come down to something utterly banal makes no difference. You begin to doubt yourself. Being wired wrong could hold you back, and it might even be fatal. We learn from a very young age to put all our effort into not becoming a loner and an outsider. We strive to belong, even if that just means wearing the right shoes or taking the right stickers to the playground.
I believe the French Revolution’s three-part maxim aptly sums up the human condition.
People are equal, for instance, in that we all need air to breathe and food to eat, and we all die eventually. Equality unites us, it reconciles differences, and we associate it with justice. Fraternity, meanwhile, is the recognition that humans are social animals. Together we are strong: we feel at home within communities where happiness, harmony and health can flourish.
I have deliberately left the first part of the maxim, liberty, until last because it is by far the most problematic. We are free because every one of us is unique, and freedom requires courage and love. We need the courage to accept ourselves, and we all need to love our own uniqueness as our personal contribution to the world around us. Where there is uniqueness, there is a market, a forum for exchange in which the diversity of human life can be celebrated.
