Contactless form of printing Grammage no longer plays a role - the method turns the process upside down.
For an innovation like the GENEVA I from BOBST to be used at all, it takes packaging manufacturers who are just as innovative and courageous and who lead the way as pioneers. Since June 05, 2015 it is official: Model is already producing on the beta installation of this global novelty, which is fully integrated into the production process at the Weinfelden site.
Mr Finotti, Head of Production Model AG (Switzerland), you have submitted the investment application for this new printing technology. Why?
We have been active in the field of digital printing technology for many years. The further development of this printing process for the production of larger print runs in the corrugated board industry has always been a question of time for me, which is why this third generation of digital printing systems at Model AG is the next reasonable step.
When did you start dealing with the issue of digital printing for large orders?
Since the first investment in our digital printing facility a few years ago.
Why exactly the BOBST SA solution?
Because there is currently no comparable solution on the market in the field of digital mass production for the corrugated board industry.
What makes BOBST so special?
BOBST is the world market leader in our industry and has a lot of experience with corrugated board. The entire material handling is based on the many existing solutions that BOBST engineered at other facilities. This is one of the most important elements of this digital printing system.
What was the biggest challenge for you in this project?
The whole facility is very large and needs a lot of space. The implementation into the material flow in an optimal way required some constructional and structural changes. It was a great challenge to implement all this during an ongoing 24-hour operation without downtime.
The digital press prints CMYK, but no spot colour. You explained at the press event: "With CMYK, we cover 80 to 85 percent of the colour range."
Our experience is that we can print even difficult brand colours and our customers are amazed at how well we manage their corporate colours. Varnishing is currently carried out in a downstream process, however, a varnishing unit for the digital printing press is under development.
When will the varnishing unit follow?
In the first quarter of 2016.
What distinguishes the new digital press from solutions previously available on the market?
The GENEVA I works with a water-based printing technology and is a fully automated machine for the personalised mass production of digital printed products in an unprecedented high print quality (600x900dpi). It impresses with a crystal-clear print image and also stands out in productivity with an incredible speed of 200 m/min.
Are there any quality certifications in the field of digital printing?
Yes, Model is the first Swiss corrugated board manufacturer to be certified according to the "Process Standard Digital Printing, PSD". Certification in the field of digital mass production defines and guarantees clearly structured processes in data handling and data management throughout the entire process. This enables Model to meet the ever-increasing market demands.
And what are the advantages of PSD for brand product manufacturers?

The stream inkjet technology of Kodak is groundbreaking. What are the advantages of the new printing technology in packaging printing?
Compared to flexo printing, stream inkjet technology has the advantage that it is a contactless form of printing - it no longer matters which grammage a liner has or which corrugating medium is used. The method turns our entire process upside down. We used to think in terms of the print image and selected the material accordingly. Today, on the other hand, stability and what a product needs are clearly in the foreground.
