Dear Reader Budgeting for next year has been completed, and we are looking forward both to meeting our many objectives and, especially, to our forthcoming investment projects.

At the heart of most of these endeavours will be digitalisation, or as the Germans have coined it: ‘Production 4.0’. But what does this industrial revolution actually involve?

A revolution results in lasting, fundamental structural change to one or more systems. The way I see it, this particular revolution will involve a high degree of automation along the entire value chain, coupled with optimising our production layout and logistics through the use of digital networks.

These digital networks are the very essence of the revolution, as they create the great flexibility and transparency along the value chain that is needed for structural change to happen. Yet technology alone is not enough. We also need effective strategies and business models in which the human element continues to play an important part, employing the many excellent technologies that are available to increase productivity, improve quality, and optimise the whole process chain.

From this perspective, a project can only be deemed a success if a carefully prepared investment is effected to the highest standard with a high degree of technical expertise, a focus on processes, and a well thought-out strategy – in combination with proper project management and all of those involved pulling together as a team. Given the current market environment, the strategic direction adopted by a plant, or indeed an entire company, is a key element of this. In this way, we create a basis for fulfilling

A revolution is a fundamental and sustainable structural change of one or more systems. In my understanding, it includes a high level of automation in the entire value chain, optimization of the production layout and its logistics through the use of digital networking.
