    Materials science - everything you need to know about our raw material

    Some call waste paper waste, for us waste paper is the source to create something new. Waste paper is our most important raw material to be able to produce first paper and then different types of cardboard. Our packaging materials, which are produced using similar processes, differ in terms of their grammage or basis weight.

    Paper - the soul of every corrugated board

    Basic component

    An origin that goes back a long way

    In the production of paper, we remain true to the basic principles that have existed for around 2 000 years. Although we have used technological progress in the meantime, we still need wood fibres, water and energy for paper production. The difference between artisanal and mechanical production is that individual sheets were created manually, whereas today's machine production results in an endless paper web.

    Despite the rapid advance of digitalisation, paper has become an indispensable part of our private and professional lives.  As the only manufacturer of corrugated base paper in Switzerland, we produce around 410,000 tonnes of corrugated base paper annually with our three paper machines. Our investment in a paper mill in Eilenburg in eastern Germany will increase our volume accordingly in the future.

     

    We value the pursuit of awareness. Therefore, it is a pleasure for us to make an active contribution to the circular economy by producing environmentally friendly packaging materials.

    Construction

    Light & strong as properties

    Paper, a light material, gains exceptional strength when it is corrugated or ribbed. That is why the corrugation is the feature, the "soul" of every corrugated board.  

     

    A kind of lightweight paper construction creates a stable packaging material. The secret of stability lies in the shape of the flute. A paper that is only bent or folded would not have the same effect.

    Quality

    The basis for corrugated board

    Corrugated base paper is the material from which corrugated board is made. For this purpose, the corrugated board sheet needs an outer and inner cover of paper. The quality of the paper used determines the quality of the corrugated board. For this reason, a precise knowledge of the types of corrugated paper that are processed into corrugated board is required.

    Basis

    One corrugated and two smooth papers

    With corrugated board, the name already gives information about the properties. The corrugated base paper produced by Model is used to glue different paper webs together to make a corrugated board. At least one fluted paper, the so-called flute, is glued between two smooth papers, the liner papers.

    Machines

    Corrugators and corrugated sheets

    Corrugated board is produced in corrugators (corrugators). We refer to the semi-finished products produced on our corrugators as "corrugated sheets". The corrugated sheets intended for further processing are produced in different qualities as well as single-, double- or triple-fluted. The different paper qualities and flute types enable us to meet a wide variety of customer requirements for packaging in further processing.

    Process

    Single, double or triple wall corrugated board

    To give the flute its shape, a special corrugated roller is used and the corrugated paper is shaped by heat, pressure and moisture. The next step is a smooth rubber blanket paper, which is glued to the fluted paper. The resulting single face corrugated board can now be glued to other liner and corrugated papers or finished directly with an outer liner. Depending on the composition, we speak of single wall, double wall or triple wall corrugated board.

    Quality

    Texture as a quality factor

    The constellation between the number of flutes and the liner paper thus determines the quality of the respective corrugated board. Quality aspects can be checked on the basis of various characteristics such as edge pressure resistance, tuckability or burst factor. Model's Blanket papers are particularly stable due to their own production and can be printed well on the outside as well as on the inside. Model loves quality and our closed paper circuit enables us to always meet our own quality requirements as well as those of our customers.

Production covers various areas, from the manufacture of corrugated cardboard to the creation of simple transport packaging and high-quality displays. A team of experienced employees from all areas supports the entire order processing process.

    Robustness

    Material density and homogeneous structure

    Characterised by a solid material density, a homogeneous structure and reliable robustness, the product experience is guaranteed not only visually but also haptically. This is our solid board or also called cardboard. The cardboard made of up to 100% recycled material has become indispensable in various industries, such as . B the food or cosmetics industry.

    Optics

    Optimum printing possibilities

    Solid board consists of one or more glued layers. The packaging material solid cardboard is particularly robust and resistant because, unlike corrugated cardboard, there is no air between the paper webs. Moisture is not primarily a challenge, as the packaging material is not very sensitive thanks to its high density. The smooth surface has optimal printing possibilities and is therefore suitable for unique and unusual designs.

    Process

    Solid board made from waste paper and water

    Waste paper and pulp are also used in the production of solid board. With the help of the pulper, a large mixing vat, the waste paper is dissolved together with water to form a liquid fibre pulp. Via a roller, the fibre pulp enters a wire screen that is constantly moving and through which the excess water can flow off. What remains is a wet fibre web that then passes between several rollers.

    Felxibility

    Different carton qualities

    This process squeezes out the water and increasingly compresses the fibres into different calibre thicknesses from 200 g to 1,050 g/m². This results in the familiar solid board. By combining different layers, different board qualities are obtained. A scope that allows us to address the individual functions of the packaging and to offer you, the customer, a tailor-made packaging solution.

    Basis

    High quality printed surface

    In the packaging industry, lamination is when a high-quality printed surface is added to a corrugated board. Rolls or individual sheets of corrugated board can be used as a substrate for lamination. Blanket paper is usually coated paper, which in turn is fused to the carrier by a pre-printed roll or individual printed sheets.

    Laminating process

    Inline, offline or sheet lamination

    Inline, offline and sheet lamination are the three methods of the lamination process. The process to be used is determined based on the desired packaging properties. In addition, certain laminating systems can also be used for productions where the substrate is a single-sided corrugated board.

    Process

    Laminating station and gluing unit

    A laminating system is divided into different stations with different configurations. The laminating station is responsible for applying the ducked blanket paper to the corrugated board material. In order for the different materials to be glued together, the gluing station glues onto the flute tips of the single-sided corrugated board or onto the liner paper of the corrugated board. The laminated board can then be cut to the desired length if single sheets have not been used.

    Drying

    Optimal glue binding

    In the last step, the delivery section, the product goes through two drying phases of the laminating machine. The first phase serves to re-press the sheets in the individual press section, while the second phase guarantees an optimal glue bond by means of a belt press.
