    Guideline: The optimal food packaging

Everything about the requirements for food packaging, how to pack food securely – and why packaging made of environmentally friendly paper & cardboard is a good choice.

Food packaging: 32°C, 36 hours Intro text

Sending frozen meat in summer at 32°C? This isn’t a problem with the optimal packaging for food. We put our cool packaging through its paces with fine heat sensors: They keep the desired temperature for up to 36 hours. Even in hot summers. Find out how on this page.

Reliable insulation is just one requirement for food packaging. Food packaging is regulated by law and must be well thought out: Because it protects and keeps food fresh, provides consumers with the right information, and at the same time is practical and environmentally friendly.

    Food packaging: three examples

    For bottles

High-quality cardboard bottle packaging is ideal for shipping with freight forwarders. You can send bottles in it unbreakable, lying or standing.

    For frozen products

For frozen products, such as frozen meat, it is crucial that the cold chain is not interrupted. The refrigerated packaging, as secondary packaging for your product, makes a significant contribution to this. Although it doesn’t touch the food directly, it naturally meets all hygiene standards.

    For liquids

Bag-in-Box is the proven packaging for liquid foods. Whether milk, cream, salad dressing or cooking oil – the dream team of bag and box forms an oxygen barrier so liquids can be kept longer. Beverages and other liquids can be filled and tapped very easily. No mess, no product waste.

Food packaging: three levels of packaging

    Primary packaging

The first packaging is in direct contact with the product. For example: individually wrapped chocolate waffles.

    Secondary packaging

The second packaging usually has a high proportion of paper or is made entirely of corrugated cardboard. It can be removed without touching the actual product – the chocolate waffle.

    Tertiary packaging

The third packaging serves as a transport and storage aid. For example, when the bags with chocolate waffles are loaded onto a pallet, wrapped with straps and sent with optimal protection.

Packing food: Here’s how it’s done

Cool, keep warm, protect from moisture

Thermal insulation is the magic word in food packaging. Cold or frozen foods should stay cool, warm foods should stay warm – and everything should be as fresh as possible. Did you know that paper has a very high insulating value? It is even used to insulate buildings. Together with its partner, flax fleece, paper is ideally suited for thermal packaging. Because flax fleece can absorb moisture in packaging without being damaged.

    Secure closure

To ensure that nothing leaks out, the insulation remains intact and the packaging remains hygienic, packaging for food items needs a particularly secure closure. You can also use environmentally friendly adhesive tape.

    Simply open & close

Food packaging scores points when it is easy to open and close again. In the catering industry, and also privately, nobody wants to fiddle with closures for a long time or repackage products because the original box was damaged when opened.

    Label packaged food

What must be on the secondary packaging? In Switzerland, pre-packaged food should be labeled in at least one official language (D, F, I). Mandatory information must be provided clearly, legibly and permanently in a conspicuous place. You can find out what information this is in the ordinance on information about food. There is also the Food and Commodity Ordinance and product-specific ordinances.

    The right size

Unnecessary packaging? Food packaging shouldn’t create this impression. Oversized packaging also wastes raw materials and storage space. Custom-fit food packaging is better received by customers and the environment and is easy on your budget. Feel free to talk to us about your needs for customized food packaging:
