Corrugated cardboard know-how

What is corrugated cardboard? When is corrugated cardboard the most stable and what do the different types of corrugation mean? Expand your knowledge of corrugated board here.

Corrugated cardboard – the stuff packaging is made of

Have you ever dreamed of flutes? Our packaging experts at Model often feel the same way. Not the beautiful sounds of flutes in a nice symphony – but flowing paper, which is combined in several layers to form incredibly stable corrugated cardboard.

We’ve collected our concentrated expert knowledge for you so you learn more about corrugated cardboard. Read here:

  • Flute types and their advantages

  • Flute combinations

  • Technical values of corrugated board

  • Secrets of different types of corrugated cardboard

You probably use the fascinating material corrugated cardboard almost every day. With your new knowledge of corrugated board, you’re guaranteed to make good packaging decisions in the future – for example when choosing your moving or shipping boxes.

Flute types, shapes and technical values

Single wall

The corrugated board consists of an outer cover, the corrugated sheet and an inner cover.

Double wall

The corrugated cardboard consists of two corrugated sheets glued together on one side, laminated with a cover paper.

Triple wall

The corrugated cardboard consists of three corrugated sheets glued together on one side and laminated with a cover paper.

The advantages of corrugated cardboard

Paper, air, glue. These ingredients ensure the stable lightweight construction of the corrugated board. Several layers of corrugated paper are glued to one or between several layers of other paper or cardboard.

Why is corrugated cardboard so stable? This is due to the shape and arrangement of the fluting. It cushions against external and internal loads, since the pressure is distributed evenly over the entire surface of the corrugated cardboard. This stable construction also occurs in nature, for example in wasp nests. You can find all the important terms around corrugated cardboard in our dictionary:

Corrugated cardboard in detail

Light to heavy

Corrugated cardboard for various products

You can flexibly adapt corrugated cardboard to the weight of your packaged goods. Whether light or heavy products – with the right type of corrugation you can pack and ship almost anything.

Single wall: Suitable for lightweight, shatterproof products

Double wall: Suitable for heavy or fragile products

Triple wall: Suitable for very heavy or very fragile products

Medium, fine & micro

The types of fluting

The height and pitch of the wave, or fluting, determine the flute type. The smaller the corrugation pitch and height, the lower the stackability and buffering effect of the corrugated board. However, the printability of the corrugated board increases. The most common flute types are the C-flute (medium flute), which has good cushioning and padding. The B-flute (fine flute) is ideal for small filling quantities. The E-flute (micro flute) can be printed on very well.

Flute combinations

With double-wall corrugated cardboard, BC flute (fine and medium flute), EB flute or EE flute can be combined. With triple-wall corrugated board, ACA (coarse flutes-medium flutes-coarse flutes), BAA (fine flutes-coarse flutes-coarse flutes), EBC (fine flutes-fine flutes-medium flutes) or BBC (fine flutes-fine flutes-medium flutes) are common. Cardboard boxes made of this corrugated cardboard provide reliable padding and are stable for different product sizes.

The technical values of corrugated board

What must a box made of corrugated cardboard be able to do? It must be stable with a low dead weight, it should be cheap, stackable and easy to use. DIN 55468 defines three specific quality features for the packaging material corrugated board:

  • the bursting strength in kPa (kilopascals)
  • the puncture work in joules
  • the edge crush resistance in kN/m (kilonewton meter)

Bursting strength

The resistance that a sample of corrugated cardboard clamped in a circle opposes to a pressure that increases uniformly on one side until it bursts.

Puncture work

The measure of the resistance that a clamped sample of corrugated board opposes to the mechanical penetration of a puncture body.

Edge crush resistance

The maximum resistance that a sample of standing flute corrugated board will offer to a force acting in that direction.

Grammage

The paper strips of the corrugated board have different ratios of mass to area. Corrugated paper, for example, has grammage between 90 g/m² and 140 g/m².

Stacking crush resistance

The measure of the stacking strength of corrugated board packaging. The test method is the box compression test.

Flute form

The flute form produced in Switzerland is the sine wave.

Corrugated cardboard: The secret to the right variety

How do you find the right corrugated board for your own application? When making your selection, always consider the size and weight of your packaged goods and the shipping route. This results in

  • a specific flute combination (two or three flute types can be combined with each other, giving the corrugated cardboard specific properties),

  • a certain grammage and the type of base paper (e.g. the particularly robust type of paper Kraftliner or the cheaper type of paper Testliner as cover paper and semi-chemical pulp for the flute),

  • a specific packaging construction for the stability of the packaging and the protection of your product.

The FEFCO code for a better overview

The FEFCO code makes it easier for you to understand the designs of standardized shipping packaging. Because all standard boxes made of corrugated cardboard have an internationally used code that simplifies communication between manufacturers, retailers and consumers. Read detailed information on the FEFCO code here.

To help you quickly find your way around the Model Online Shop, we have cataloged our extensive range of standard corrugated cardboard boxes according to the FEFCO code. Just enter your desired FEFCO number in the search.

It depends on the manufacturer

In addition to standard boxes, companies in the corrugated board industry offer their own optimized types and individual designs, which are developed together with customers, for example.

We at Model have been optimizing corrugated board and packaging since 1882. Since our company was founded, we have valued the highest quality made in Switzerland. Thanks to our modern machinery and extensive expert knowledge, you can order high-quality corrugated cardboard packaging directly from the manufacturer here in the online shop. Of course with the optimal price-performance ratio.

We also make no compromises when it comes to sustainability. It’s anchored in our DNA, because recycled cardboard and paper are the raw materials for our corrugated cardboard products.
